Lindsay Hester, Principal of Hester Interiors, brings to the table nearly 10 years experience in Interior Design. Lindsay is a 2001 graduate of the Interior Design program at San Diego State University. During her final year of classes, she was hired by one of her instructors, in whose firm she worked for six years. During that time Lindsay was involved in projects ranging from high end residential remodel and new construction to car dealerships and restaurants. Working in a prestigious firm with relatively few designers offered exposure to many aspects of the design industry and allowed for involvement in the day-to-day operations of a design firm.

While continuing her full-time employment as an Interior Designer, Lindsay went to work in 2004 for The Art Institute of California- San Diego as a part time instructor teaching The History of Architecture, Interiors and Furniture. Over the subsequent four and a half years Lindsay would eventually teach classes from introductory level interior design through thesis level design and presentation. Having also taught Lighting Design, AutoCAD and Business Management for Interior Design, Lindsay gained invaluable insight into many aspects of her craft and was able to remain on the cutting edge of knowledge in the industry. Teaching offered the opportunity to twice chaperone students on an educational and inspirational trip to the European countries of France, Spain and Italy. The encounters with historical architecture had a strong influence on Lindsay’s teaching as well as on her approach to design.

Lindsay opened her own design firm in 2004. In the time since, she has had the privilege of working on clients’ homes in many of San Diego’s finest communities as well as San Francisco and Scottsdale, Arizona. Lindsay’s work has been published and honored with awards on numerous occasions. She was the winner of San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyle magazine’s Kitchen of the Year for Best Small Space and Bath of the Year for Most Creative Space Planning. She won second place in the San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers Design Excellence Awards for Residential Space under 3500 square feet and third place for a master bathroom in the same competition. Lindsay has been quoted in numerous publications including magazines and text books.

Lindsay’s approach to every project is unique, just as every family is unique. She is able to take a client’s priorities and makes them her own. Be it the timeline, budget or any other constraint, Lindsay is able to addresses the concerns of her client and   gauges the success of a project based on those parameters. By understanding your family dynamic, needs and activities, Lindsay is able to design from a practical perspective. Since this approach requires a personal relationship between client and designer, each project is approached with the sensitivity this type of relationship dictates. By first interpreting your functional needs, Lindsay is able to create beautiful, effortless, organized and efficient spaces.

Lindsay subscribes to a design approach commonly referred to as Universal Design.  Broadly defined, a universal approach to design takes the position that the built environment should serve the greatest number of people, regardless of age, mobility or physical stature. This means you won’t get to the end of your project and wish a doorway was wider to accommodate your active son’s temporary wheelchair after a skiing accident or wish for a full bath and bedroom on the first floor when an aging parent moves in with your family. Universal design makes sense for a number of reasons including accessibility and comfort as well as resale value. There is nothing as beautiful as a space that is easily livable.

This is one of the many benefits of working with the educated and experienced designers at Hester Interiors. Not only will your designer respond to your individual needs but will also keep in mind the bigger picture considerations of your home. Many people can create a space that looks good enough to impress the neighbors, but it takes a professional to create a space that is effortless to live in and easily maintained, while projecting the lifestyle that is uniquely yours.

Katy Demmer
Katy's passion for interior design is showcased in every project with which she is involved. Since graduating from San Diego State University in 2001, her design career has focused on residential and model home interiors.

Katy's design philosophy stems from the idea that every space and occupant is unique. A great design must be customized according to the user's lifestyle. She believes that one should be inspired by their home environment, as it is a retreat from the chaos of life. Distinguishing a balance between function and interest in a space is what Interior Design is all about for Katy.

Although Katy joined Hester Interiors in 2006, the professional relationship between she and Principal, Lindsay Hester stretches back to 2000.  Lindsay and Katy's history creates a dynamic, collaborative design process.

Her designs are carefully thought-out and straight forward. She always strives to find the design that best showcases her clients’ vision.  While her designs usually have somewhat of a contemporary edge, she is well-versed in all types of design.
